THE HUNGRY AND THE ANGRY

WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY AND WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY

Journal from the desk Chief Editor of DWI

President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria:
Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Today, I stumbled upon a thought-provoking concept that has been lingering in my mind since the beginning of the ongoing protests in Nigeria and across the globe:  the distinction between the hungry and the angry. It's a subtle but profound difference that can have significant implications for our interactions and our overall well-being.

THE HUNGRY

The hungry are those who are driven by a genuine need. They are motivated by a desire to fulfill a basic human requirement, such as food, shelter, or security. Their hunger is not a fleeting emotion but a deep-seated longing that compels them to seek sustenance.

When we are hungry, we are often more focused and determined. We are willing to work hard and persevere to meet our needs. We may even be willing to compromise or sacrifice in order to achieve our goals.

There are several different types of hunger, each with its own unique characteristics and causes:

Stomach Hunger: This is the most basic type of hunger, and it is caused by a lack of food in the stomach. It is often accompanied by feelings of emptiness, rumbling, and gnawing in the stomach.
Intestinal Hunger: This type of hunger is caused by a lack of nutrients in the body, even if the stomach is full. It can be caused by malabsorption disorders, such as celiac disease or Crohn's disease, or by a diet that is deficient in certain nutrients.
Cellular Hunger: This type of hunger is caused by a lack of oxygen and glucose at the cellular level. It can be caused by conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.
Psychological Hunger: This type of hunger is caused by emotional factors, such as stress, anxiety, or boredom. It is often characterized by cravings for specific foods, especially sugary or fatty foods.
Learned Hunger: This type of hunger is caused by environmental cues, such as the sight or smell of food. It is often associated with eating habits and routines.

In addition to these five main types of hunger, there are also several other factors that can influence hunger, such as hormones, genetics, and sleep.

THE ANGRY

The angry, on the other hand, are driven by a sense of injustice or frustration. They feel that they have been wronged or deprived of something they deserve. Their anger is often a reaction to external circumstances or perceived threats.

When we are angry, we are more likely to be impulsive and reactive. We may lash out at others or engage in destructive behaviors. Our anger can cloud our judgment and make it difficult to think clearly.

There are many different types of anger, each with its own unique triggers and expressions. Some of the most common types of anger include:

Irritability: This is a mild form of anger that is often characterized by feelings of annoyance, frustration, or impatience. It is often caused by minor inconveniences or hassles.
Hostility: This is a more intense form of anger that is often characterized by feelings of resentment, bitterness, or hatred. It is often caused by perceived threats or injustices.
Rage: This is the most extreme form of anger, and it is often characterized by feelings of fury, violence, and destruction. It is often caused by major traumas or losses.

Other types of anger include:

Passive-Aggressive Anger: This type of anger is expressed indirectly, through behaviors such as procrastination, sarcasm, or withholding affection.
Explosive Anger: This type of anger is characterized by sudden, intense outbursts that are often out of proportion to the situation.
Chronic Anger: This type of anger is a persistent state of anger that can last for weeks, months, or even years. It is often caused by unresolved traumas or conflicts.

It is important to note that anger is not always a negative emotion. In some cases, anger can be a healthy response to injustice or wrongdoing. However, it is important to express anger in a healthy way that does not harm yourself or others.
It is therefore very important to know the reasons and the motives behind your anger.

THE DIFFERENCE

The key difference between the hungry and the angry lies in their underlying motivations. The hungry are driven by a need, while the angry are driven by an emotion. This distinction is crucial because it determines how we respond to them.

When we encounter someone who is hungry, we can offer them support and assistance. We can help them to meet their needs and alleviate their suffering.

However, when we encounter someone who is angry, we need to approach them with caution. We need to understand the source of their anger and try to address it in a constructive way. Simply reacting to their anger with anger will only escalate the situation.

CONCLUSION

Recognizing the difference between THE HUNGRY and THE ANGRY is essential for fostering healthy relationships and creating a more compassionate society. By understanding the motivations behind their actions, we can respond to them in a way that is both helpful and respectful.

As I reflect on this concept, I am reminded of the importance of empathy and understanding. By putting ourselves in the shoes of others, we can better appreciate their perspectives and respond to them with compassion. Hunger and anger can be constructive or Creative depending on the level of maturity and understanding of the affected or infected individual.

Therefore, in any political, religious or traditional society or organisation, the leadership and the followership have the responsibilities of constituting the act of mutual understanding and respect in order to maintain a stable and productive and prosperous environment.

And most importantly, irrespective of your status, it is mandatory, in the light of the above explanation about THE HUNGRY and THE ANGEY, for you to know your situation and limitations because both hunger and anger are naturally phenomenon but how we respond, react and manage them mark the difference, noting that, it is possible to be HUNGRY and never be ANGRY.
